As a rock shop owner or manager, chances are you get requests for some pretty hard-to-find fossils from time to time. Serious collectors and would-be paleontologists are known to search everywhere until they find the exact fossil specimen to fill a void in their collection, but for the average customer, there are certain bulk fossils that are perennial bestsellers. Ask your fossil supplier for more information about these popular wholesale fossils.

In order to strike a balance between the rare, fossilized remains of long-dead creatures, and the more common fossil specimens that attract amateur collectors, it makes sense to keep the following bulk fossils in stock at all times.

Metacanthina Trilobites, shown here, are the fossils of extinct creatures that were found in the sea between the Cambrian and Permian eras. These 2” long fossils often show the head, body or tail sections of the organisms.

Small and Medium Orthoceras fossils are squid-like marine cephalopods, which are believed to be about 350 million years old, are mainly found in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.

Small and Medium Ammonite fossils are marine cephalopods, and are known as the ancient predecessors of the modern Nautilus and are also found in mountainous areas of Morocco.

Bagged bulk fossils, such as small Goniatite fossils (another 350 million year old marine cephalopod) and 50 million year-old sharks’ tooth fossils are sold in bags of 10 pieces each.

For the amateur fossil collector, there is nothing like learning about the origins of the fossils one collects. That’s why most of the bulk fossils sold at fossil supplier Pikes Peak Rock Shop come with information cards that include the discovery location, fossil type, and approximate age of each specimen.

If you’re new to selling fossils, you may be asking yourself “What types of bulk fossil rock should I be buying?” With so many different fossil families and price ranges, this is an important question to ask.

Getting to know your customers – and learning how to attract new ones – is the key to success for selling rocks and minerals of any kind. But before you stock up on bulk fossil fish and bulk fossil rock, or order bulk fossil shark tooth in large quantities, it helps to have a plan in mind to serve a every type of fossil collector.

Many fossil collectors are only interested in a very specific type of fossil. Children are one of the largest groups of fossil collectors, but they are more interested in owning specimens that look a fish or insect. If your collectors are mostly kids, then stock up on bulk fossil rock that looks like the real thing. Look for larger trilobite specimens with lots of detail.

For more serious collectors, consider stocking a wider variety of large and small specimens from different eras and geographic regions. Look for quality over quantity, as these fossils tend to be more expensive and take longer to sell.

If your store gets a lot of tourist traffic, then be sure to include bulk fossil shark tooth along with your bulk fossil rock order. These inexpensive fossils tend to sell very well, even to people who generally do not collect fossils.

The longer you sell fossil rocks, the more you will notice that fossil collections are as different as collectors themselves. As you begin to notice an interest in a particular fossil family, or phylum, it will become much easier to determine the type of inventory you need to be selling. It is best to align yourself with a reputable wholesale fossil dealer that knows the current marketplace.
