Rutile is a major ore of titanium, which is a metal used for high tech alloys. It often forms needle-like crystal inclusions inside quartz. This form of quartz is known as rutilated quartz and it looks like small bars of imbedded gold. Rutilus is, in fact, the Latin word for red. Rutilated quartz has also been referred to as Cupid's darts, Venus hair stone and Fleches d'amour. It is believed to relieve feelings of loneliness and depression. Sizes run from 2" to 5" depending on price point. Color of stones runs from clear, to Golden (like in picture) with most having a smoky quartz color.
